The Challenge
A pharmaceutical cleanroom runs hundreds of air changes per hour, so the ventilation load dwarfs the rest of the building. Any recovery scheme had to protect product integrity first.
The Solution
The team chose sensible plate exchangers rather than rotary wheels. Plates keep supply and exhaust fully separated, eliminating the small carryover a wheel introduces, and need no motor in the airstream.
Results
- Pre-heated and pre-cooled the make-up air before HEPA filtration
- No stream mixing, preserving cleanroom classification
- Recovered a large share of the conditioning load
Lesson
In contamination-sensitive spaces, isolation can outrank peak effectiveness. A plate core gave strong savings with zero cross-contamination risk.
